While it would be easy to dismiss Arsenal’s 5-0 thrashing of Southampton in the FA Cup today as men against boys, it is worth remembering that Arsene Wenger took a chance by fielding an exceptionally young midfield today away to St. Mary’s Stadium.
Giving Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Francis Coquelin the night off ahead of an important game against Watford in midweek, Wenger entrusted the midfield duties to his favourite hyphenated trio – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Jeff Reine-Adelaide, two amongst the three being teenagers. Arsenal’s young brigade sent out on loan this season to get some much needed playing time were in good form at the weekend, led by Polish stopper Wojciech Szczesny, who continues to impress during his loan spell at AS Roma.
The former and quite possibly future Arsenal no.1 was in top form as Roma beat reigning Italian Champions Juventus 2-1 with the Pole pulling off a late wonder save at full stretch to deny the Old Lady of Turin a share of the spoils. Continue reading →
Lukas Podolski’s agent Nassim Touihri has revealed that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been desperate to hold on to the forward this summer, with the player set on a move to Turkish side Galatasaray. Touihri was quoted telling German publication Bild: “He wanted to keep Lukas, but couldn’t give him a guarantee that he will be starter.” (read more)
Arsenal edge closer to Carvalho
Arsenal are understood to be nearing a move for William Carvalho, with reports in The Daily Telegraph revealing that the Gunners may succeed in beating Manchester United to the signature of the Sporting Lisbon midfielder.
