Arsenal in shock move for Spanish star

The Gunners are looking to spring a surprise in the transfer market by making a move for Spain and Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas who has been benched for the last couple of games by manager Jose Mourinho over performance issues and could be sold if Mourinho remains at the Madrid hot seat.

Casillas has come through the youth ranks at Real Madrid and having made his senior team debut in 1999, has played close to 650 matches for the club in all competitions. He is the record cap-holder for Spain with 143 appearances and has won the European Championships twice and the World Cup as captain of the national side. Casillas has been a regular in the Madrid team but Mourinho has recently dropped the goalkeeper in the La Liga hinting unhappiness over the player’s confidence.

Should Casillas be booted out of Madrid, Arsenal are hoping to challenge Inter Milan and Paris St. Germain for the player’s signature. Manager Arsene Wenger has been monitoring options in goal due to lack of competition for No.1 Wojciech Szczesny and has also been linked with Sunderland’s Simon Mignolet. With Szczesny not convincing Wenger of his talents, the Gunners boss could make a move for Casillas this month.
