Arsenal enter chase for Hungarian international

Reports in the German press indicate that Arsenal are set to battle Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund for the signature of Mainz striker Adam Szalai, who his club have valued at £20 million.

Hungary international Szalai played for the B-team at Real Madrid for 3 years but never got a chance to display his talent for the senior side and consequently, moved to Mainz in 2010. He has scored 48 goals for the club in 175 appearances in all competitions, including 9 so far this season in the league. His contract with Mainz runs till 2015 but has been sought by various clubs for his traditional attacking style.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been guaranteed cash to spend as he looks to strengthen his squad in January and has identified attack as a top priority. Olivier Giroud was signed to replace Robin van Persie but the Frenchman has shown glimpses of his brilliance in flashes. Wenger has played contract-rebel Theo Walcott in a central attacking role lately but doubts still remain over the player’s future at the club prompting Wenger to look at options in the transfer market.

Barcelona’s David Villa and Atletico Madrid’s Adrian Lopez have been reported targets but Barcelona have denied selling Villa in January while the Lopez deal is nowhere close to be done. Marouane Chamakh has joined West Ham on loan freeing up space for another striker and Szalai could be the answer to the Gunners’ attacking problems.

  1. Unknown soldier, wat is the need buyin average players for the sake of buyin, wenger shud beef up the defence and the mildfield, we have jovetic, dzeko, lewansdoski etc all of them are available to buy.

  2. God, this blog is poor.
    1. I’m hungarian, the guy’s not bad, but definitely not top team quality. He’s also a lot similar to Giroud, tall and strong, target man. Had a bad injury though like a year ago.
    2. The usually reliable transfermarkt.co.uk values the guy 3m.. 3M! Where did you get that 20m from? Laughable.
    3. We won’t gonna buy him. No chance at all, and the you, author know this as much as I do. Why make the post?

  3. well said Mickey, well said! if we were going to buy another Giroud type player we would have spent the £7.5 needed to get Ba, not £20m on an unknown!!
