Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes that Danny Welbeck has a similar playing style to star attacker Alexis Sanchez, however, whether the England international can achieve a similar level of success as the Chilean remains to be seen.
Speaking at his press conference ahead of the clash with Preston North End in the FA Cup, Wenger revealed that Welbeck will make his return to the Arsenal squad for the trip to Deepdale, but despite his eagerness to play, will need to make do with a place on the bench.
Wenger was quizzed about where he thought the player fit into his attacking scheme of things, and the Arsenal boss revealed, “Danny and Alexis are similar types of players, in the fact that they both love to play on the left. But they can both play through the middle and there is always an uncertainty on where their best position is.”
Wenger went on to share that he felt Danny Welbeck could well have a career at Arsenal as a central striker and he had the necessary tools to succeed in that role, however, the most important thing at the moment was to get him fit and playing again.
Regarding the youngster’s fitness, Wenger said, “Physically his fitness is at quite a good level, but of course the ideal way is to give him two or three games with the under-23s. But the situation is not always ideal, sometimes you have to hurry up.
“He wants to play. But Danny is as well conscious [of taking his time]. He came back after a long injury and had a setback so he suffered a lot. At the moment, I think he listens well to what people advise him to do, even if he is naturally impatient. After you’ve been out for such a long time you do not want a setback.”
