Olivier Giroud: “I was a bit lucky”

Olivier Giroud was left praising his lucky stars after the Frenchman scored what was easily the greatest goal of his career, one that generations of Arsenal fans will talk about for centuries.

The French striker produced a Scorpion Kick finish, flicking Alexis Sanchez’s cross with the back of his boot, all the while facing the goal, ala Henrikh Mkhitariyan on Boxing Day. What made Giroud’s strike considerably better was that he was onside when he did it!

Predictably interviewed by leading television channels after the game, Olivier was quick to credit his goal to good fortune rather than his exceptional finishing ability, sharing, “I have maximum luck, it’s just about luck. Not at all have I done anything like that before. I tried to deflect it, I think it’s my best one.”

In another interview, this time with BBC Sport, Giroud added, “It is not difficult to say it is the best one [I ever scored]. I was a bit lucky but it was the only thing I could do, the ball was behind me and I tried to hit it with a backheel. Maybe [Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s] goal inspired me, it’s the only thing you can do in that position.”

Perhaps more crucially the French striker added that the importance of the goal was not lost upon him, “It is nice for me and the team because we start the year with a win.”

The win for Arsenal keeps them 9 points behind Chelsea and 3 shy of Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title, and Giroud is desperate to make up ground on the sides above Arsenal in the league standings before what he hopes will be a crucial game in West London later this year.

He said, “We have a few games to come before the very important Chelsea one so we want to to keep winning before we go to Stamford Bridge.”
