Arsenal are believed to have opened talks with Borussia Dortmund over the potential summer signing of German international forward Marco Reus as cover for Alexis Sanchez should the Chilean forward continue his contract impasse with the club.
The Metro reports today that Arsenal are prepared to pay as much as £51 million to bring 27 year old Reus to the Emirates, in all likelihood to replace Sanchez, who could well fetch a fee well in excess of that figure should he leave in the summer.
While Arsenal would love to retain both Sanchez and Ozil, it will be very tough to do so if they end up without a title this season, with the Chilean not just concerned about the monetary aspects of his deal, but the lack of silverware that the Gunners are winning.
It is rumoured that he believes little will change to make Arsenal more competitive next season, and unless the Gunners can make a serious run for the Champions League title this campaign, Alexis may well be ready to make the next step of his journey.
Meanwhile, coming back to Reus, the aforementioned story reports that Arsenal are preparing a £6.8 million a year, which translates to about £130,000 a week, much more in line with the Gunners’ wage structure than Alexis’ current demands.
