Arsenal legend Sol Campbell has pointed out that the Gunners will need to splash big bucks in the transfer market in order to have a chance at winning the Premier League, or even finish ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, this season.
The Englishman, who has also played for Arsenal’s arch rivals in his career, was quoted telling The Metro: “There’s a long way to go but the way Chelsea are looking at the moment alongside Tottenham and Liverpool – those teams just seem to be a little bit ahead of Arsenal at the moment. Arsenal need to settle some contracts and get that sorted, maybe buy another player before the January window closes.”
Campbell went on to point out that the Gunners currently need a new, strong forward and a good, world class holding midfielder, if they wish to perform better in the league. He added that the side can still win the Premier League – something that they have done from a really difficult position in the past too – but that they are a lot of points behind Chelsea at the moment.
The Englishman said that Arsene Wenger’s side can still improve upon their performances. He pointed out that while the problem of injuries and loss of form is always going to be there, the boss needs to have players on the bench who can come on and make up for the aforementioned issues. He also said that the presence of experienced players in the squad is also a must as they can often prove to be game-changing performers.
The Gunners, who are currently on 44 points from 21 games, trail Chelsea by 8 points and rivals Tottenham and Liverpool by a solitary point.
