Wimmer own goal gives Arsenal half-time lead

An own goal from Tottenham centre back Kevin Wimmer in his first start of the season gave Arsenal a 1-0 half-time lead in the North London derby at the Emirates today.

In the 42nd minute, Wimmer headed into his own net from Mesut Ozil’s freekick, and Arsenal were more than a little fortunate not to have the goal ruled out for offside as at least two Arsenal players were in an offside position when Ozil struck his freekick from the right wing and Wimmer rose to beat them to the ball.

The goal though on a whole was richly deserved and had been coming for a while as Arsenal recovered from a slow start to take control of the game in the last 15 minutes of the first half.

Alex Iwobi and Mesut Ozil both had half-chances which they would like another crack at, while Theo Walcott struck the frame of the woodwork, beating Hugo Lloris for pace at this near post.

Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen had both threatened for Spurs, who had turned up for this game with an old fashioned 5-3-2 formation, and had made themselves hard to break down early on.
