Arsenal kept another clean sheet against Middlesbrough in the Premier League yesterday, but for the second consecutive game in this competition, the opposition Manager targeted Nacho Monreal as the weak link in the Arsenal backline.
Last week against Swansea City, Monreal was burned repeatedly by Mo Barrow, and yesterday Adama Traore with his electric pace did the same.
With Wenger’s team selections having become increasingly predictable, opposition Managers are getting a chance to target select players, and it is becoming increasingly evident that Monreal is on the receiving end due to his lack of pace.
As a defender, I have tremendous respect for the Spaniard, he has been a key ingredient in the Arsenal backline, and is probably both a better passer and a reader of the game than Gibbs.
However, with Gibbs hardly getting a chance in the Premier League, it is becoming easier for Managers to target Monreal and the Spaniard is struggling to cope. Maybe it is time Arsene Wenger mixed things up just a little bit.
