Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, certainly, looks desperate to sign a world class centre back this summer. According to reports in The Daily Mail, the Frenchman, who had been reportedly showcasing keen interest in signing Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia until now, has approached Atletico Madrid with regards to the possibility of signing young defender Jose Gimenez.
The 21 year old Uruguayan, who has developed into one of the most highly rated young centre backs in Europe in recent times, has also been known to be a target for the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid in the past.
Gimenez, who already has 28 senior national team caps under his belt, made 37 appearances for Los Rojiblancos last season, and was one of the most consistently impressive players for the side over the course of the entire campaign. And with the player considered to be a star in the making, the Gunners are now believed to be viewing him as a potential long term replacement for the likes of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny at the club.
Meanwhile, as expected, Atletico are believed to be unwilling to part ways with the player any time soon, unless of course they are paid close to £40m. However, given Wenger’s frugal nature in the transfer market, it will be interesting to see if he indeed decides to spend that kind of cash on the player or tries to sign the comparatively cheaper Mustafi, for whom they are yet to make a move, in the days to come.
