In an admission that is unlikely to do Arsene Wenger any favours amongst the growing number of fans unhappy with his leadership at the club, the Arsenal Manager admitted after today’s game with Manchester City that he was surprised by how much the Citizens were up for the game.
Wenger shared after today’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City, “I was surprised by the intensity of City’s start. We expected an intense game but they really came out with strong pressure. The good thing is that we absorbed it and we’ve shown good character today.”
The word character is one that we have seen Arsene Wenger use once too often in recent seasons, but it was very much appropriate considering the effort Arsenal put in today to come back not once but twice from a goal down to level the game.
Wenger added in his interview with Sky Sports, “Man City today decided to give a big present to Pellegrini in his last home game – they were on fire. When it was 1-1 it didn’t look like we would score but when we were 2-1 down we looked hungry and dangerous again. The players wanted not to lose.”
Looking ahead to the final game of the season, Wenger shared, “We have to finish the job now in the league against Villa – we want to finish the season with a win at home.”
An Arsenal win in that last game of the season and a defeat for Tottenham away to Newcastle could give the Gunners second place, an outcome Arsenal fans this season are likely to accept given that we haven’t finished in the top 2 for 11 seasons now.
