Arsenal have received a timely boost at the end of a difficult week with the Gunners’ most consistent defender over the last season and a half, Nacho Monreal, ending speculation about his future by committing himself to a new long term contract.
Monreal had just 5 months left to run on his existing deal and was being perpetually linked with a return to Spain, with Athletic Bilbao in particular looking to sign him. However, the 29 year old has inked what is believed to be a new 4 year deal which will see him remain at the Emirates till 2020.
Monreal has played a key role at Arsenal, since moving from Malaga in January 2013, helping Arsenal end their trophy drought by picking up a couple of FA Cup titles and the FA Community Shield, and is looking to add a Premier League winners medal to his tally at the end of the current campaign.
The defender spoke about why he chose to extend his stay at the Emirates, saying in an interview with Arsenal Player, “I have a good relationship with my team-mates and we keep improving year after year. I wanted to stay here and I could extend my contract. I would like to play here for many more years.”
Arsene Wenger also expressed his delight at Monreal committing himself to the club, saying, “He is a very important player at the club because he can play left-back and centre back. He has the consistency in his performances that is requested at the top level. Overall, his attitude has been absolutely fantastic on a daily basis since he arrived here. He’s 100 per cent committed and I think as well he has always improved since he has arrived and has shown that in many big games as well. He’s calm, focused and dedicated. He’s well-accepted and loved by his partners. He has the modest approach of a player who wants to give his best to the team. Everybody senses that and that’s why I think it’s important for the club to have that stability.”
Wenger also added that he believes that Monreal sets a fantastic example for the youngsters at the club with his work ethic and professionalism, and was personally thrilled that he has chosen to spend the next part of his career in North London.
Arsenal fans will now be hoping that Joel Campbell follows suit in similar fashion and also commits himself to the club by inking a new long term contract.
