Arsenal have been provided with a massive boost in the race for their long term target Yoann Gourcuff. According to reports in the press, Olympique Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas has admitted that they will not be offering him a new contract, and that he may move away from the club soon.
Aulas was quoted telling Canal+: “It’s going to stop, yes. It’s with a little bit of nostalgia. He’s a great player who hasn’t been able to settle. The best thing that could have happened was that he would have shown he is a great player with us. It’s not good news for him, that’s true.”
The 25 year old, whose current contract at his club ends next month, has been on the wishlist of the north Londoners’ manager Arsene Wenger for quite a while now. However, the player himself has shown a marked deterioration in the level of his performances in recent seasons. This year, Gourcuff has played just 19 games for his side, most of them as a late game sub, scoring 3 goals and providing 5 assists in the process.
Nevertheless, apart from being a versatile player, the 28 year old also possesses loads of experience playing for his clubs and country. Hence, Wenger may still benefit from his services if he is able to tap the potential of the player to the fullest.
