Miralem Pjanic has joined a long list of players who have recently snubbed the opportunity to go to North London. Recently, Arsenal lost out on targets Clement Grenier and Maxime Gonalons, with both deciding to continue developing their careers at Lyon. Meanwhile, Arsenal are set to miss out on long-time transfer targets Stefan Jovetic and Gonzalo Higuain, with the former set to join Manchester City and the latter being linked to Chelsea and Napoli. It was said that this would finally be the summer Arsenal broke the bank on some genuine world-beaters, but that has ceased to happen as of yet.
The Daily Express reports that whilst Pjanic has not yet signed a contract extension, alerting top clubs in Europe, he does not want to move away from the Italian capital. When asked about the issue, Pjanic said, “I don’t want to leave. Everyone here knows that.†Roma have made positive moves this summer, signing Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman whilst still being able to keep Daniele de Rossi at the club. They will be happy that the Bosnian playmaker has decided to continue plying his trade at the Stadio Olimpico.
For Arsenal, times are desperate. After the announcement of their new-found financial muscle that will allow them to compete with the Premier League’s best, precious little has happened. Arsenal were linked to the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez earlier this month. Higuain looks set to not join, Rooney will probably move to Chelsea should Manchester United let him leave, and Liverpool are demanding exorbitant fees for Suarez. Anyone who knows Arsene Wenger’s mindset knows that he won’t pay 55 million pounds for any player. Something’s got to give soon for the Gunners, or they are likely to suffer a major fan backlash.
