Lorenzo Melgarejo of Benfica has caught the eye of Arsene Wenger according to the player’s agent. The Paraguayan, who is a natural wingback, had an exciting campaign with the Portuguese giants and was also in the starting XI in the Europa League Final against Chelsea.
Melgarejo joined Benfica in 2011 and was loaned out to Pacos Ferreira for one season. In his debut season with Pacos, the 22 year old scored 10 goals in 29 games and finished the campaign as the highest goalscorer for the club. After having being reinvented as an attacking left back for Benfica in 2012 by Jorge Jesus, his contract was extended till 2018 with a release clause of €30 million.
Signing Nacho Monreal in the January transfer window has mellowed the crisis at the left back position at Arsenal and Wenger is unlikely to dig in the market for another left sided wing back. But Lorenzo’s attacking prowess could be utilised to offer an alternative to Lukas Podolski on the left wing.
According to Melgarejo’s agent Juan Gabriel Appleyard Arsenal have shown a liking to the player, while Fenerbahce also lurking for his signature. However, no concrete steps have been taken by either club.
Despite the youngster’s prodigious talent, Wenger is likely to refrain his scouts from lurking around Benfica’s training grounds for adding a player who will serve the Gunners more on the bench than on the field.
